The dishes have been in the sink for three days. You know they matter. You can see them. You have walked past them maybe forty times, each time thinking "later," and later keeps not arriving. Then a friend texts that they are coming over in an hour, and suddenly the kitchen is spotless in twenty minutes.
Nothing about the dishes changed. What changed was the trigger. If your brain runs on an interest-based nervous system, that is the whole story in one scene: importance alone does not start you. Interest, novelty, a challenge, or a deadline can flip you on like a switch. An interest-based nervous system is a brain that gets motivated by engagement rather than by importance. Dodson, writing in ADDitude, spent years looking for the one feature every ADHD client shared, and landed here: "People with ADHD primarily get in the zone by being interested in, or intrigued by, what they are doing. I call it an interest-based nervous system."
Most productivity advice is built for the other kind of wiring, which Dodson calls importance-based. A person with an importance-based system can look at a task, decide it matters, and use that judgment as fuel. The task is dull, but they do it anyway, because "I should" is enough to move them. The reward-and-consequence model works. The to-do list works. The sticker chart works.
Your wiring does not run on "I should." You already know the dishes matter. Knowing has never been the problem. The gap sits between knowing a thing matters and being able to start it, and no amount of re-explaining why it matters closes that gap. This is a brain that works differently, not a brain that cares less.
That distinction is worth sitting with, because so much shame lives in the space where it gets misread. When the motivation is not there, people around you read it as not caring, or as choosing the fun thing over the responsible thing. You may read it that way about yourself. It is not what is happening. The caring is intact. The ignition is wired to a different key.
Interest-based nervous system ADHD: the activators
If importance does not start you, what does? Dodson names a short list of states that reliably get an ADHD brain into gear. Across his ADDitude writing, the activators are interest, challenge or competition, novelty, and urgency. When one of those is present, focus shows up, sometimes with startling intensity. When none of them is present, the task can sit untouched for days no matter how much it matters.
You will see these packaged online as tidy acronyms, INCUP or ICNU or PINCH. Treat those as community shorthand, not gospel. Dodson himself never uses a single acronym, and the fan versions disagree about which letters count. The four states are what matter. Here is what each one actually feels like from the inside.
Interest. A task you are curious about pulls you in without effort. This is the origin of hyperfocus, the state where you look up and three hours are gone. You cannot summon it on demand, and you cannot force it onto a task that bores you, but you can notice which tasks reliably carry it.
Challenge or competition. A task framed as a game, a puzzle, or a race against someone (including a past version of yourself) can light up when the same task framed as a chore stays dark. "Beat yesterday's count" moves you when "do the count" does not.
Novelty. New is engaging. A fresh approach, a new spot to sit, a different tool, a route you have not walked before. Dodson is blunt that novelty fades fast, which is why the system that felt magical in week one goes dead by week four. That is not you failing the system. That is novelty doing exactly what novelty does.
Urgency. A real deadline creates a chemical push that importance cannot. This is why so many ADHD brains produce their best work the night before it is due, and why "I have all week" is a near-guarantee that nothing happens until Thursday night. Urgency is powerful and it is also expensive, because living on last-minute adrenaline is exhausting.
Notice what these four have in common: none of them is willpower, and none of them is "reminding yourself it's important." They are conditions you can build into a task, on purpose, from the outside.
Why "just discipline yourself" advice fails
Here is the part that took me a long time to forgive myself for not knowing sooner. The advice you have been handed your whole life, be more disciplined, want it more, just push through, is not wrong because you are too weak to follow it. It is wrong because it is a set of instructions for an importance-based nervous system, handed to a brain that does not have one.
Dodson puts it as being given "a neurotypical owner's manual at birth." The manual is not defective. It is just written for different hardware. When you try to run importance-based strategies on an interest-based brain, they fail, and then the failure gets stored as evidence that something is wrong with you. Decades of that adds up. A lot of ND adults are carrying a pile of "proof" they are lazy or broken, and every item in the pile is really just the wrong manual failing to run.
So the move is not to try harder at the thing that has never worked. The move is to stop, and to plan a different way. Try different, not try harder.
How to plan with an interest-based nervous system
You cannot make a boring task interesting by deciding it should be. You can, though, attach one of the four activators to it. That is the entire skill, and it is learnable. Here is how it looks in practice.
Pair a boring task with an interesting one. Body-doubling and habit-stacking both work on this principle. The dull task borrows engagement from something you actually want. Fold laundry while a show you love plays. Answer the dreaded email in the coffee shop you like being in. The interest does not have to come from the task itself; it can come from the context you wrap around it. (This is the same logic behind body-doubling, where another person's presence supplies the engagement.)
Build urgency on purpose, before it builds itself. If your brain only starts under deadline, you can manufacture softer deadlines instead of waiting for the do-or-die one. Set a timer and race it. Tell one person you will send them the thing by 3pm. Book something right after the task so there is a hard stop. A Pomodoro timer works for a lot of ND folks precisely because twenty-five minutes on a clock is a tiny, repeatable dose of urgency you can turn on whenever you need it.
Rotate for novelty on a schedule. Because novelty fades, expect your systems to go stale and plan to refresh them rather than mourn them. Change the color, the location, the tool, the order. When a planner layout stops working after a month, that is the novelty wearing off, not your failure to be consistent. Over a few weeks you will have your own list of what reliably switches you on, and you can start aiming those triggers at the tasks that need them.
None of this fixes your attention or makes you neurotypical, and it is not meant to. It is you learning to work the machine you actually have, instead of the one the manual assumed.
